Union Update

Posted: January 14, 2008

Hello Brothers and Sisters. We would like to take some time to update you on the current issues within the Local. We are very pleased to announce that the Square One process finished the year with a 60% reduction in recordable injuries. We would like to congratulate everyone on a job well done and thank the membership for your participation. Moving forward this year, the Steering Committee is working on implementing phase 2 of the process which will include Meter Reading, VRM, and Stores. We, the Union Leadership, are in support of the Square One process and will do whatever necessary to insure the safety of our members. The Union also meets with the Company every month to review any safety concerns that do not fall within the operating parameters of the Square One process. If you have any concerns around safety that you feel are not being addressed, please inform your shop steward or call the Union Hall. Conectiv Energy has decided that although they have a very good safety record (6 recordable injuries over all areas in 2007) that they can improve. They have decided to mirror the Square One process with a Peer to Peer based safety process of their own. The concept of “No Name, No Blame” will be in effect as Conectiv Energy and the members of Local 1238 embark on the implementation process. Each plant will have a safety committee to oversee the process and the members of Local 1238 will be conducting field observations without fear of reprisal. As with the Square One process, we will be very involved in overseeing this process and removing any barriers that prevent a safer work environment. We would like to thank our members working at the Edgemoor and Hay Road facilities for participating in these early stages of the process. On January 16, 2008, the leadership of Locals 210, 1238, 1307, and 1900 will meet to discuss issues that are common among all four Locals. Moving forward, we plan on working together to better serve our respective memberships and improve the overall solidarity of the IBEW on the PHI property. We believe that there are enormous benefits in combining our resources to attain our common goals. One of the issues that are important to all of the Locals is the use of contractors. There are too many contractors on property doing work that should be done by the hard-working members of the IBEW. Local 1238 is committed to have meetings with department heads in each area to impact the use of contractors and capture the work that we know our members are capable of doing in a competitive and efficient manner. We have been successful in obtaining some large jobs in the power delivery area of the business and we will continue to be diligent in regards to keeping our work in house. Finally, we are selling sweatshirts and hats with the IBEW Local 1238 logo. If you are interested in purchasing a hat or sweatshirt, please see your shop steward or call the Union Hall. Thanks for your support and we look forward to having a great year in 2008.
